About the Edinburgh & Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre
Located in Balerno, the Edinburgh & Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre (ARRC) is the oldest Scottish SPCA Centre. The Centre opened its doors in 1930 and was originally set up as a rest farm for horses due to concerns about the welfare of working horses. The Scottish SPCA cared for horses during a period of rest, as well as retired horses and ponies to spend their final years in comfort. As time progressed, the Centre evolved into a facility capable of caring for all animals.
The Edinburgh & Lothians ARRC has:
- 38 dog kennels
- Cattery for 42 cats
- 12 stables for equines
- 18 rabbit/guinea pig units
- Space for 10 rodents
- Vivarium for 36 reptiles and snakes
- 7 fish tanks
- 10 ferret units
- Space for small birds
